COURSE 3

  • THE "CLAVE" RHYTHM
  • REVIEW AND RECAP COURSE 2
  • ROCK STEPS & CROSS BODY LEADS
  • NEW RIGHT TURN

what you're going to learn

Lesson 1

RHYTHM TRAINING

In this course we dive into a new core rhythm called the "Clave". A rhythm referred to as the backbone of Salsa.   It's a typically played with two wooden sticks but many people like to clap it out loud. Let's learn how it sounds and its counts.

Lesson 2

REVIEW COURSE  2

The key to dancing is muscle-memory so let's start our lesson dancing right away while reviewing Course 2's material: The "Side step", and new "Right Turn" combination.  As always, we will recap it all with counts and then to music to solidify it all.

Lesson 3

THE ROCK STEP

Here comes the fourth core basic step in this program: the Rock Step. A move of which its technique will be useful for future moves like Open Breaks, Baskets,  Copas, and more. I like using rock steps specially while in Closed Position .

Lesson 4

CROSS BODY LEAD (CBL)

The Cross Body Lead is Salsa's core traveling move. Since we learned how to dance in Closed Position (CP), lets now learn how to do a CP CBL . Many future moves derive from CBLs, or use CBLs, so master it well!

Lesson 5

LET'S COMBO IT UP

This combination includes material covered in the last 3  courses. Your challenge is take them apart and try linking them in a different order. your ability to do this is  what's going to set you apart from other dancers.

LESSON STRUCTURE

In each lesson, you will learn fundamental techniques and footwork about the core steps used when Salsa dancing.  You will build upon each lesson as you continue to progress through the program, grow on your knowledge and begin to Salsa!
This is how the Zero 2 Salsa courses are structured:
  • Learn the footwork associated with each move or turn.
  • Layer-in technique through a series of steps and important tips.
  • Practice at various music speeds to improve processing time.
  • Gradually add components individually and build an entire move.
  • Combine moves into complete patterns.

We spend a majority of our time dancing together in order to: help you build better muscle memory; give you added confidence on the dance floor, and continue preparing you for the next stage.

what our students say

"... I have finally found my "forever" salsa instructors - yay! Juan and Erica bring it ALL - detailed, tailored-to-me lesson plans, easily understandable/relatable explanations of the moves, patience and an awesome sense of humor.... Under their instruction, my raw musical and rhythmical abilities have evolved/become more "refined" and allowed me to feel more confident when out social dancing with others. I still have a long journey ahead of me and plan on having Juan and Erica by my side the whole way. Love them!"

- Andrea W.

"I have been dancing for about 5 years off and on now.  I've danced all around the country and I have to say that Juan is definitely the only instructor I felt could take me to the highest levels that I want to reach in Salsa! His attention to detail and his mastery of the fundamentals is the best that I've ever seen being taught anywhere...  He and Erica have been outstanding and very supportive of helping me to feel more confident and strong in the social dancing scene.  I am truly grateful to have them guide me along this journey to become a high level dancer and you would be too!!"

Rojo

Rojo, aka Steve Meyer has been involved in some sort of musical adventure since he was born. Joining the UCSD ballroom dance team, involving travelling and competitions in Ballroom, Latin Dances and Swing, also gravitating toward West-Coast Swing, a style that really helped him put moves together that “hit those hits…” Then Rojo discovered Salsa dancing. What he loves most about Salsa music is it’s richness in rhythmic diversity. Rojo competed and performed on the World’s biggest stages, and also got the opportunity to perform with the great Tito Puente himself. Teaching Salsa at all levels for over 10 years, his favorite teaching activity was “Drills, drills and more drills” to train footwork and technique. Rojo hopes to bring the same passion for the music, footwork and drills to The Salsa Beat community.
